Smallest Bar in Key West

Duval Street in Key West is on the to do list for most Key West vacationers. The street is lined with bars, live music, restaurants and shops and is a great place to pull up a bar seat and do some people watching. One popular activity for some visitors is the Duval Crawl, or bar-hopping on Duval Street. Upon inquiry, we were told that this means trying to visit as many Key West bars in one night as you can handle!

We were in Key West for several nights, so we took our time and sampled some of the best known bars while keeping our eyes open for the smaller, lesser known bars.

One very small, but not necessarily lesser known bar that we enjoyed was the Smallest Bar in Key West. Yes, that’s the name and for good reason. The bar is – at the most – 8 feet wide, has about 4 barstools, the bar and the bartender. Don’t come here looking for much more than a frosty beer, but do stop by if you want to enjoy some conversation with some instant friends! Everyone in the bar beckoned passer-bys to come in and instantly started up a conversation with whomever ventured in. We only hung around for about 20 minutes, but really enjoyed our time at the Smallest Bar in Key West.

Making Vanilla Rum

Vanilla rum is not always easy to find and is an absolute necessity when concocting a batch of yummy Rum Therapy “Nilla Killas“. I recently ran across several recipes to make your own vanilla rum – well actually you aren’t making the rum – just flavoring it with vanilla! It apparently takes a while for the full flavoring to occur, so I may start testing the process this weekend. Hope I can wait a full month to try it!

  • Pour off ½ cup of rum from bottle and save in different container for future use.
  • Add cut vanilla beans to bottle.

Nilla Killa

Visiting White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for the first time was a trip. Our boat pulled up to this incredibly beyond believable gorgeous white crescent of sand as we “rapped” I’m on the Boat (very badly I admit).

As we anchored, Captain Darrel told us that we should visit Soggy Dollar Bar and order a “Nilla Killa”. Don’t think we even asked what was in it – it sounded good. “Wicked good” said Darrel. Darrel asked if we wanted to dinghy in. Dinghy in???? This is the home of the Soggy Dollar Bar – we had to swim in with our soggy dollars to get the full effect – right?

Anyway – great day, great drink. Soggy Dollar’s Nilla Killa recipe is TOP secret according to Mic – the bartender at Soggy at the time, so of course we set out to re-create when we got home (although it’s basically a Painkiller with vanilla rum). If only it came with that incredible view! Enjoy!

Caribbean Rum Punch

Rum Punch is a refreshing rum based beverage that we’ve had the pleasure of sampling in many different tropical locations, from the Caribbean to Hawaii. Each island seems to have their own distinct twist, from the type of rum used to the combination of juices. Experiment with different tropical fruit juices (mango, papaya, pineapple, etc.) until you find your perfect combination!

Our favorite Rum Punch experience happened on a sailing trip in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We were lucky enough to explore the deserted island of Petit Tabac – an island used in filming Pirates of the Caribbean. Our captain and cook concocted a huge container of Rum Punch that the 6 of us enjoyed as we hiked and explored the beautiful island. We tried to recreate the flavor of that Rum Punch upon returning home and the following recipe about nails it – sorry we can’t include the island!!
