Crab Races in St. Croix

A bucket full of crabs = a whole lotta fun? In St. Croix the answer would be yes!

copyright Rum Therapy
Crab Races in St. Croix take place in several different locations, several times a week. We experienced our first Crab Races at the Divi Resort on the SE side of St. Croix.

Tito and Sue run Crab Races at the Divi once a week and it’s a surprisingly good time!

We arrived that evening and paid $2 each for a crab, assigning them a winning (or so we thought) name for the event. Michael Johnson, Crab-tastrophe,  Send Momma Home (don’t ask…) and Pinch Me all seemed strong and ready for the race.

copyright Rum Therapy
Once all bets were placed, Tito began to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Well, not really a frenzy, but we were certainly excited to see how our crabby athletes could perform.

copyright Rum Therapy
They turned the bucket of crabs over in the middle circle and watched as they began to scurry.

Within a minute or two, we had our first winner. There were several heats, and the winner of each heat then competed for the Grand Prize. Unfortunately Michael Johnson, Crab-tastrophe,  Send Momma Home (don’t ask…) and Pinch Me did not win, or actually even place, so we didn’t win any of the great prizes offered from local establishments such as locally made jewelry, dinner or a trip for two to Buck Island, but we had a great time anyway.

And, while enjoying the races, enjoyed a number of delicious Cruzan Confusions masterfully concocted by the crew at the Divi Resort. Mmmm. good.

Cool Rum Shooters

Ever have the urge to eat a shot glass? No? Well, me either until I ran across this freezable shot glass mold. The directions say to fill the reusable mold with water, juice or your favorite drink mix, freeze it, then pop our your fully-formed frozen shot glasses. So, of course we gave it a try by freezing pineapple juice in the mold, then filling the perfectly formed little shot glasses with some spiced rum. Yum.

Ice shot glasses are cool enough, but how about freezing mojito mix then adding a shot of white rum? How about a margarita shot? Think of the possibilities! Ready to make some of your own? Click here to check ’em out! Fred Cool Shooters Shot Glass Mold

Now, excuse me, I’m going to go eat another shot glass.

Cupecoy Bay Beach, St. Maarten

The last beach on the Dutch side before crossing over to the French side on the west side of St. Maarten is a beauty. The beach at Cupecoy Bay winds among cliffs and caves and the strikingly blue water is a beautiful contrast to the soft, light tan sand.

Known as a “clothing optional” beach, Cupecoy has some longer expanses of beach as well as a series of small caves, perfect for those looking for a little solitude, or just to explore.

We got to Cupecoy early one morning to walk and explore the beach and caves. It was gorgeous and we were treated to a new view around each corner.

At the end of the beach we ran across a small bar which unfortunately was not open yet that morning.

We took the path on top of the cliffs back to our car and enjoyed the beauty from above Cupecoy almost as much as down by the beach. Breathtaking.

Cupecoy has become known as a haven for naturists and if sunbathing and swimming “au natural” is your thing, you will be in good company. Even if you’d prefer to keep your clothes on, Cupecoy is well worth a visit as it is simply beautiful, has some good snorkeling and it’s one of the best places to watch a sunset on St. Maarten!

Spooky Rum Punch

Bloody good and easy to make, this deep red concoction will have your guests screaming with delight.

Halloween is just around the corner and we seem to get a lot of requests for rum themed Halloween cocktails. We ran across this one recently and set out to give it a try. After a bit of searching, were able to find the black sanding sugar, but if you have trouble finding it, you can easily make your own using this recipe. The black licorice strings were harder to find, and although a black licorice spider looks really cool (and is edible!) we opted for a plastic one that we dangled from a bamboo pick.

Optionally, you can float some dark rum on the top, which sounds cool, but ours just kept blending with the rest of the cocktail, so we ended up just adding 2 oz. of gold rum and foregoing the dark rum floater.

Spooky Rum Punch

Tropical Rum Punch, only spookier!!
Course: Drinks
Servings: 1

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Pour the black sanding sugar on a flat plate.
  • Rub the lime wedge on the rim of a cocktail glass, then dip in the black sugar to coat.
  • In a cocktail shaker, add ice, light rum, lime juice, simple syrup and pomegranate juice.
  • Shake about 30 seconds until chilled, then pour into the sugar rimmed glass over ice. Enjoy!!

Notes

A Few Fun Options:
1. Use black string licorice to make a spider garnish!
2. Leave room at the top. Gently pour the dark rum on the top so that it floats.
Mmmm…spooky AND  good!

Savannah Bay, Virgin Gorda

Savannah Bay, Virgin Gorda – one of the British Virgin Islands most beautiful beaches… A long crescent of powdery white sand with calm turquoise waters – a true beach lovers experience.

Last year, during an on-island stay in Virgin Gorda, we made our way back to Savannah Bay. Heading north on N Sound Road, we stopped at the overlook of Savannah Bay. Looking past Savannah Bay from the overlook,  you can also see Pond Bay and Mahoe Bay.

The barely visible thatched umbrella in the lower middle of the picture is on Savannah Bay Beach right off of the small parking lot.

copyright Rum Therapy
Parking is available in a small dirt parking area close to the beach. Turn in to the parking area at a dirt road between the overlook of Savannah Bay and the V in N Sound and Nail Bay Road. We’ve never seen more than two other cars there during our visits and this gorgeous stretch of beach is usually peaceful and uncrowded.

copyright Rum Therapy
copyright Rum Therapy
Apparently Savannah Bay is usually quite calm and flat. The first time we visited, the surf was rough and we didn’t venture into the water, but walked the beach and sat in the sand marveling at the beauty.

copyright Rum Therapy
Upon subsequent visits, the water was as calm as it could be and we spent hours swimming, floating and snorkeling in the crystal clear water.

copyright Rum Therapy
Not as busy as some of the other very popular beaches on Virgin Gorda, such as The Baths, Savannah Bay has quickly become one of my favorites on Virgin Gorda for its shear beauty, solitude and peacefulness. Oh, and the snorkeling is pretty great too!

Besides a small parking area and are a few thatched umbrellas for shade there are no amenities at Savannah Bay (just like we like it!).
PERFECT for a little Rum Therapy (rum, sun and total relaxation…)

Elvis’ Beach Bar, Anguilla

Touted as having the “Best Rum Punch in Anguilla”, we knew we had to make a stop at Elvis’ Beach Bar in Anguilla to check it out. We made our first stop at Elvis’ on a sail to Anguilla a few years back. We anchored in Road Bay and immediately noticed the activity around Elvis’.

Elvis-1-O
Elvis’ sits on a stretch of beautiful sugar soft sand in Sandy Ground Village and offers up views like this of Road Bay.

copyright Rum Therapy
We had only a very short time to visit that first time to Anguilla, so we sat at the boat bar, sampled a rum punch and then reluctantly headed back to our boat as we had an early morning departure planned. The music and partying ran into the wee morning hours at Elvis’, and we vowed to return someday to experience more.

copyright Rum Therapy
Fast forward a couple of years
and we scheduled a return to Anguilla  and Elvis’ was on the list. Unfortunately, due to very poor planning on our part, Elvis’ Beach Bar was CLOSED the day we were there and although we were able to look around and take a few pictures, we were unable to meet Elvis OR test out the fantastical rum punch again…

copyright Rum Therapy
Sigh.

We spent a few minutes relaxing on the chairs in front of Elvis’, and then moved on to one of the other great beach bars in Sandy Ground.

Elvis, we’ll be back! Can you have a few rum punches ready for us?

Mamajuana from the Dominican Republic

Rumored to have medicinal as well as aphrodisiac properties, we set out to find out more about Mamajuana during our recent visit to the Dominican Republic. We had actually heard, and even sampled Mamajuana at the Mt. Pellier Domino Club on St. Croix, where Norma is famous for her batches of Mamajuana, but apparently it actually originated from the Taino Indians in the Dominican Republic and is considered a native drink of the DR. Regardless, it is widely available in the DR and we sampled a good amount of it while there – for research purposes, of course…

copyright Rum Therapy
Mamajuana is pronounced mama-whan-a, not mama-joo-whan-a as we were corrected numerous times! This powerful elixir is a mixture of red wine, honey and rum that is soaked in a bottle with twigs, bark, leaves and herbs. Different spices are sometimes used as well. Each bottle tastes a bit different, depending on the mixture and the amount of time spent soaking together.

Mamajuana is commonly consumed as a shot, but we also sampled several beverages made with Mamajuana, such as a Mamajuana Mojito and a Motokoncho (Mamajuana, DR Rum, vodka and cherries). Many Dominican Republic natives believe Mamajuana can cure many ailments, from the common cold and flu to more serious conditions and is widely touted as an aphrodisiac. We were told it was probably best to sample Mamajuana at our resort or a restaurant and not just a roadside stand to be safe.

We brought a bottle back with us, to enjoy a little more of the taste of the DR at home and to try to create some Mamjuana of our own. With proper care, the twigs, herbs and leaves found in the bottle can be re-used for a number of years to create more batches of Mamjuana.

Just wish we could have brought a little of this back with us as well…
