Blanchards Beach Shack, Anguilla

Located on idyllic Meads Bay, Anguilla, a colorful establishment called Blanchards Beach Shack doles out scrumptious food and drinks for those enjoying some time in the beautiful sand and turquoise water.

Blanchards Beach Shack is located next door to Blanchards Restaurant, undoubtedly one of the finest restaurants on Anguilla. Both are owned by Bob and Melinda Blanchard who are originally from Vermont and New York. They are entrepreneurs who have successfully started a number of businesses, and one day decided to sell everything, move to Anguilla and open a restaurant. They’ve written a book about their adventure entitled A Trip to the Beach: Living on Island Time in the Caribbean, which from all accounts, is an entertaining and enlightening account of the joys and challenges of selling it all and moving to a tropical island.

Blanchards Beach Shack opened in 2011,  and in Bob and Melinda’s words, “On an island known for its expensive restaurants, we offer a delicious alternative in a casual, picture-postcard setting.”

We ordered a couple of drinks, an M.B.L.T and a Cheeseburger (see the menu here) and enjoyed to beautiful Caribbean colors before us.

After enjoying our meal, we grabbed our beverages and headed for the beach.

Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent, or…

…you can just plop in the sugar soft sand, like we did.

Blanchard's-13-O

Stunningly beautiful beach and great food and drinks – what’s not to like about Blanchard’s Beach Shack. Hope to be back soon…

Mopion, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Mopion, a tiny island close to Petit St. Vincent, could really be considered just a sandbar.

Mopion, copyright Rum Therapy
This perfect little stretch of white sand surrounded by crystal clear, blue water is ever changing with the weather and takes all of 5 minutes to walk around – if you walk sloooowly…. There is one thatched umbrella on Mopion, maintained by the nearby Petit St. Vincent Resort, and it’s decorated with the names of those lucky enough to have visited.

copyright Rum Therapy
It’s not easy to get to Mopion, but well worth it if visiting St. Vincent and the Grenadines. If you’re sailing the Grenadines, consider making a stop if close to Union Island or Tobago Cays. Guests of Petit St. Vincent Resort and Palm Island Resort can get a ride over to Mopion for a visit.

copyright Rum Therapy
What do you do on a deserted island for a day? Anything you want.

1. Snorkel

2. Float in the crystal clear water

copyright Rum Therapy
3. Enjoy a picnic

4. Take a nap under the thatched umbrella

5. Listen to the sound of the waves (or tunes from The Ultimate Rum Therapy Playlist!)

6. BYOBB – Bring Your Own Beach Bar and name it after yourself! (Guess what we named ours?)

7. Absolutely nothing….just enjoy your time on this tropical beach paradise…

Whatever Mopion is – an island, a beach or just a little sandbar in the middle of the ocean, Mopion was ours for a day…

The Ultimate Rum Therapy Beach Playlist

We asked for it and YOU DELIVERED! Thanks to all of you who took the time to submit your favorite tunes for the ULTIMATE Rum Therapy Beach Playlist! Quite the eclectic list and they may not all make your top picks, but they’re excellent submissions and will give us all a place to start when looking for some more tunes for vacation and beach time.

Short Siesta - copyrightSome of your favorites not on the list? Be sure to send them to us and we’ll update from time to time.

The list is arranged in alphabetical order (sort of – I’m sure I made a few errors in alphabetizing and I’ll go back and fix them later – right now my brain hurts!) We checked and were able to find most of these tunes on either iTunes, Amazon or You Tube, and it looks like most can be easily downloaded.

The songs were not all written or originally performed by the artists listed, but, if listed, is probably the preferred rendition of the song for this list and several songs are listed with more than one artist!

So, here it is. The ULTIMATE Rum Therapy Playlist as submitted by you – our Facebook and website friends and followers! Enjoy!

You Had Me At Rum…

Daiquiris, mojitos, piña coladas, painkillers, bushwhackers…all tasty and wonderful rum concoctions, but sometimes we simply want just a pour of our favorite sipping rum over a piece of ice. We’re excited to be attending the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival next week to sit in on some seminars given by rum experts and sample many of the fine rums that will be featured. Maybe we’ll even find a few new favorites!

What are some of your favorite sipping rums?

The ULTIMATE Rum Therapy Beach Playlist Submissions

Check out the ULTIMATE Rum Therapy Beach Playlist here!

One of our most popular website posts is entitled “BEACH Playlist“. For those of you that have read our post entitled “BEACH Playist”, you’ll realize that it’s not a comprehensive list of our favorite beach songs, instead, its simply 34 great songs that remind us of our all time favorite beach vacations.

Judging by the amount of visits we receive on this post, there are obviously,  some very lucky peeps planning to spend some time “On The Coast of Somewhere Beautiful” (Kenny Chesney) and want to fill their iPods with music to support their beachy frame of mind.Well, we feel it’s time to “Remedy” (Jason Mraz) this situation with your help.

If you feel like “Swimming in Sunshine” (Billy Currington), have “Two Tickets to Paradise” (Eddie Money) and want to head south with the very best tunes in tow, please help us compile the Ultimate Rum Therapy Beach Playlist by submitting your favorite five (5) tunes of an y genre (classic rock, country, classical, R & B – whatever floats your boat!) that YOU like to listen too while relaxing or playing on the beach, or on a boat, or floating in the water, or enjoying a cocktail in paradise, etc.

We ask that you choose five (5) songs from different artists and include the title of the song AND the artist. We’ll compile a list of ALL of the songs submitted (with title AND artist) into ONE GIGANTIC AND ULTIMATE RUM THERAPY BEACH PLAYLIST!!

So, grab yourself some “Boat Drinks” (Jimmy B), picture yourself on this beach and submit your 5 favorite beach songs via the comment section on this post, or on our Facebook page.
Cane Garden Bay - copyrightWe’ll compile the complete list in just a few days and post it for all beach lovers to enjoy!!

5. All Summer Long – Kid Rock

ok, two more, since we started the list….

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

There are a few beaches that we’ve come across in our travels that simply take our breath away and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands is definitely one of them.

copyright Rum Therapy
With powder soft white sand and turquoise blue, clear water set off by lush foliage, it is truly a tropical paradise.

copyright Rum Therapy
In addition to its incredible beauty, White Bay is home to some of the best beach bars around, such as One Love Bar & Grill, Gertrude’s, Soggy Dollar, and Ivan’s Stress Free Bar. (See more about Jost Van Dyke Beach Bars here: Bar Hopping On Jost Van Dyke)

Separated in the middle by a rocky outcropping, it’s well worth the hike to go from one end to the other checking out the people, the scenery and ALL of the bars! (be sure to wear shoes or sandals when crossing the outcropping. There is a cement stairway over the top of it, but there are some sharp rocks to navigate on Ivan’s side)

copyright Rum Therapy

copyright Rum Therapy

Getting there: Get to White Bay via boat, taxi over from Great Harbour, or rent a jeep from Great Harbour (the adventurous, non-inebriated, very fit or frugal individuals can walk over the hill from Great Harbour. We hiked it once…)

Beach: beautiful white sand with gradual access. Great for swimming in the quieter areas (watch for boats – White Bay can get very busy with boats, especially in the afternoon), snorkel by the rocks on the east end.

copyright Rum Therapy
Recommended for: well, anyone that loves a beautiful beach…

copyright Rum Therapy
Tip: because of the popularity of the beach bars on White Bay (especially Soggy Dollar), it can get very busy in the afternoon. If you like a party, you’ll love to be there at the busy time. If you’d rather experience White Bay when it’s quieter, consider visiting in the early morning, or later in the evening when the day crowds have gone home. Here are a just a few pictures taken during some of the quieter moments…

And top off a perfect beach day with a perfect sunset…

Hiking the Na Pali Coast in Kauai

When visiting the tropics, do we like to do something other than soak in the sunshine and drink rum drinks? Absolutely, although we really do like to sit in the sunshine and drink rum drinks….

kapaa beach at sunset - copyright
Anyway, during a trip to Kauai, we wanted to experience the incredible Na Pali coast. Since there are no roads over the Na Pali coast, the only way to experience the beauty in person is by helicopter (which we did), boat (which we did not do due to the rough surf while there) or by foot.

The trail along the Na Pali coast extends 11 miles (one way) from Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach along the spectacular cliffs of Na Pali. Many people like to backpack in and camp close to Kalalau Beach and camping permits can be obtained through Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources.

Although we would have loved to experience the phenomenal beauty of Kalalau Beach in person, the thought of hiking 11 miles (one way) and sleeping in a sleeping bag (as opposed to the very comfortable bed we had back at the resort) was, well, not that appealing. Instead, we opted to hike two miles in to Hanakapi‘ai Beach with the option of continuing another two miles to Hanakapi‘ai Falls.

We drove to Ke’e Beach, parked in the parking lot at the trail head and headed up the trail.

Na-pali-Trail-copyright
First part of the trail, hmmm….what are we getting ourselves into?

Dramatic scenery around every bend. As we approached this area, we heard thunderous crashing – almost cannon like and then spotted this sign on the trail.

warning-copyright
Yikes! Think we’ll take this one seriously…
The next corner gave us our first glimpse of Hanakapi‘ai Beach.

Na-Pali-beach-view-copyright
A few hundred more feet down,we crossed a river and landed on the sand of Hanakapi‘ai.

At that point it was fairly obvious why getting in the water was discouraged here…

After exploring some of the geological features of the area, we sat on the beach enjoying some water and Snickers bars.

Cave
We lingered a lot longer than we should have, taking in the rugged beauty and tremendous power of the ocean.

na-pali-wave-copyright
And when we finally stood up again, we realized that there was no way we’d make it another two miles to Hanakapi‘ai Falls. In fact, with our legs feeling like limp noodles, we’d be lucky to make it back the two miles to our car in time to get back to the resort for our scheduled, and after this hike, very needed 4:00 massage on the beach….

There are bars with a view and then there are bars with a VIEW! Hog Heaven is a Bar & Grill sitting high atop Virgin Gorda with an absolutely beautiful view of the entire North Sound.

One of the rum drinks on the menu was a Blondie Special and we ordered that and a rum punch and took a seat to drink in the view.
