Le Sand, Baie Nettle, St. Martin

We set out to write about a pretty stretch of sand we spotted while exploring St. Martin between Baie Rouge and Marigot, but ended up focusing on a new (at the time of our visit) beach bar/restaurant on Baie Nettle, or Nettle Bay, called Le Sand.

Le Sand Beach, Bar and Restaurant, St. Martin

We parked in the parking lot behind Le Sand and walked between Le Sand and Dreams Beach to get a look at Baie Nettle. The beach was nearly empty and gorgeous! Once we feasted our eyes on the white sand, blue water, view of Marigot and very inviting seating, we ended up staying a while…

copyright Rum Therapy
A variety of beach lounges are available for patrons of Le Sand

Turns out, Le Sand had just recently opened and apparently the word had not gotten out yet. We didn’t mind –  we had the beach almost completely to ourselves and enjoyed a few beverages while lounging in the sun and chatting with the friendly staff.

Marigot in the distance

We decided not to stay for dinner as we were heading back to Dawn Beach that evening and were still engorged satisfied from yet another visit earlier that morning to Sarafina’s in Marigot.

That, apparently was our loss because since our visit, both Le Sand and and it’s next door neighbor,  Dreams Beach, have become highly recommended for their gourmet French cuisine – some say even rivaling some of their competition in Grand Case. Wow – that’s some stiff competition!

What to See and Do in Marigot, St. Martin

The capital of the French side of St. Martin is the beautiful little town of Marigot. Lying between Simpson Bay and Grand Case, Marigot offers a multitude of things to explore, to see and to do.

(see our St. Maarten/St. Martin Map to find Marigot)

Marigot fringes Baie de Marigot, a popular harbor offering a calm anchorage to the many boaters that stay here. We’ve visited Marigot a couple of times now; once by boat and once while staying on island. The following are a few of the things we enjoyed during our visits.

copyright Rum Therapy
Marigot Market
In a square in the middle of Marigot, local vendors set up in an open air shop every day except Sunday. The best mornings to visit are Wednesday’s and Saturday’s when you’ll find the widest variety of items and shops. Find local art, many infused rhums, spices, fresh fruits, vegetables and fish and souvenirs.

Restaurants, Bakeries and Drinks
After working up a thirst or hunger shopping at the Market, be sure to stop by one of the lovely outdoor cafe’s or restaurants some fresh local fare and to people watch
.

Just off of Boulevard de France, behind the market, we found two places that we must mention. The Coconut Juice House is a great place to get fresh juice in a coconut, pina coladas or daiquiris and to talk to the owner “Coconut Man”. There you can watch him open the coconut with a machete and squeeze the sugar cane used in the drinks he makes.

copyright Rum Therapy
We enjoyed a very cold pina colada which was so refreshing in the warm afternoon sun.

copyright Rum Therapy
Down the road from The Coconut House is a delectable French Bakery called Sarafina’s. If you like French pastries and cappuccino, you should plan to make a stop (or two) here. Read more about Sarafina’s in a previous post: Sarafina’s Bakery, Marigot, St. Martin

Fort Louis
Once you’ve quenched your hunger and thirst, take a walk to Fort Louis, the largest historical monument in St. Martin. Fort Louis was built in 1767 to protect Marigot from invaders and now offers phenomenal views of Marigot and the surrounding areas as well as some very interesting local history.

Access a walking path in Marigot from Rue de la Republique (see map above) or drive to a parking lot just below the monument.

A Few Other Things
The shopping is excellent in Marigot and you can find everything from souvenirs at the market to fine clothing, shoes and jewelry at the tony West Indies Mall. There are individual shops and art galleries scattered throughout the mid-town area as well.

A Ferry Terminal is located in Marigot with frequent departures to Anguilla and St. Barts. Parking is limited, so give yourself a little extra time if you need to leave your car in Marigot.

What are your favorite things to see and do in Marigot?

What to See and Do in Philipsburg, St. Maarten

copyright Rum Therapy
Whether arriving by cruise ship or spending time on the island on St. Maarten/St. Martin,
Philipsburg, the capital of Dutch St. Maarten, offers a ton of fun things to see and do, most within view of the gorgeous blue water of Great Bay.

copyright Rum Therapy
Philipsburg is an area of only a few streets sandwiched between the Salt Pond and beautiful Great Bay. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and musicians lining the streets. Do you like to shop? You can find a lot of items in Philipsburg from inexpensive souvenirs to diamonds and watches. Want to find something to eat? There are a variety of options ranging from very casual to elegant and tony. Any good bars? Well, of course! The boardwalk especially is dotted with bars with a wide variety of great tropical concoctions.

copyright Rum Therapy

copyright Rum Therapy
With the ability to dock 6+ large cruise liners and the addition in recent years of a wonderful boardwalk that is about 50 ft. wide and nearly as long as the waterfront of Great Bay, Philipsburg really caters to it’s visitors. From the cruise ships you can either walk down a lovely palm lined path or take a short water taxi ride to town. If staying on island, there are several fairly large parking lots.

copyright Rum Therapy
Looking for a few ideas of what to see and do while visiting Philipsburg? These are a few things that we’ve enjoyed during our visits there.

copyright Rum Therapy
1. The Beach

Although it can be just as busy as many of the other beautiful beaches in St. Maarten/St.Martin, Great Bay has gorgeous blue water, a calm surf and a variety of places to rent beach chairs and umbrellas. Plus you’re really close to some good bars, restaurants and shops when you need a break from the sun.

2. Eat & Drink

The majority of bars and restaurants line the boardwalk and offer a great view of the beach, surrounding hills and cruise ships. Each have their own tropical specialties.

Stop, buy a cold drink and chat with some of the local vendors on the Boardwalk.

3. Shop

Front street and the connecting streets between the Boardwalk, Front and Back street have a large variety of shops carrying local crafts, souvenirs, liquor and more expensive items.

copyright Rum Therapy
There are several liquor stores that carry a good selection of rums that we can’t find at home, so we usually buy a bottle or two to bring back with us.

And of course, be sure to stop at the Guavaberry Emporium on Front Street to sample different guavaberry rums, liquors and hot sauces. Be sure to try a Guavaberry Colada – so refreshing!

Happy Bay, St. Martin

A beautiful tropical beach really does make us happy, so when we heard about a beautiful beach on the french side of St. Martin called Happy Bay, we thought we really had to see it.

copyright Rum Therapy
copyright Rum Therapy
It’s a 15 minute hike to get to Happy Bay from Friar’s Bay, and the day we explored that side of the island we were in flip flops. We thought we’d attempt the hike anyway.

There’s parking for the trail in the lot behind Friar’s Bay and the path to Happy Bay which can be found on the north side of Friar’s Bay Beach Cafe.

copyright Rum Therapy
copyright Rum Therapy
There’s a section of trail that was a little rocky, but then it opens up to a nice meadow. Small signs painted on several rocks indicate where to go.

There are some nice views of Friar’s Bay and surrounding coves from the trail.

copyright Rum Therapy
A gate mid-way down the trail opens up to a beautiful meadow.

copyright Rum Therapy
Pass under the tree with the beautiful canopy to get to Happy Bay Beach.

copyright Rum Therapy
copyright Rum Therapy
We hear that Happy Bay is usually very quiet with very few people and although there were quite a few people playing in the water and enjoying the beautiful sand while we were there, there were still a lot of quiet spots to enjoy the sunshine and gentle surf. Currently there are no amenities available at Happy Bay, so be sure to bring in any snacks and drinks you might need.

copyright Rum Therapy
Or, just make a stop for lunch and some drinks at Friar’s Bay Beach Bar/Cafe or Kali’s Beach Bar when you get back to Friar’s Bay!

Even if you’re in your flip flops – if you like beautiful, less crowded beaches, the hike to Happy Bay is well worth it.

Have you been to Happy Bay?

Cupecoy Bay Beach, St. Maarten

The last beach on the Dutch side before crossing over to the French side on the west side of St. Maarten is a beauty. The beach at Cupecoy Bay winds among cliffs and caves and the strikingly blue water is a beautiful contrast to the soft, light tan sand.

Known as a “clothing optional” beach, Cupecoy has some longer expanses of beach as well as a series of small caves, perfect for those looking for a little solitude, or just to explore.

Cupecoy has become known as a haven for naturists and if sunbathing and swimming “au natural” is your thing, you will be in good company. Even if you’d prefer to keep your clothes on, Cupecoy is well worth a visit as it is simply beautiful, has some good snorkeling and it’s one of the best places to watch a sunset on St. Maarten!

Pinel Island, St. Martin

In the northern part of Orient Bay on the French side of St. Martin and just off the town of Cul de Sac, lies a small island called Pinel. Depending on who you talk to or the travel guide you read, Pinel Island can also be called Isle Pinel, Ilet Pinel, or Ile de Pinel.

copyright Rum Therapy
We visited Pinel Island last year during a sail around St. Maarten/ St. Martin but if staying on or visiting St. Martin, Pinel Island is very easily accessed by ferry from the town of Cul de Sac.

copyright Rum Therapy
The day we visited, Pinel Island was very busy and the beach was much more crowded than we normally like and we hear that is really pretty normal for the small island – and many people obviously don’t mind the crowds! Even though we’d probably rather spend the day at a quieter beach somewhere, we still had fun and recommend a visit for the following reasons:

copyright Rum Therapy
copyright Rum Therapy
Pinel Island main beach has lovely soft sand and the water is clear and very calm.
It’s a great area to bring the family to play in the water. You can also kayak over from St. Martin.

copyright Rum Therapy
A short hike from the beach you can find a snorkel trail with decent snorkeling and we were told that  snorkel equipment can be rented there.

copyright Rum Therapy
If you continue up the trail from the snorkel trail and you’ll be treated to fantastic views of St. Martin and Orient Beach.

copyright Rum Therapy
At the top of the trail you get a good look at the island of Tintamarre and if you look south, you may even catch a glimpse of St. Barths.

copyright Rum Therapy
There are also a couple of more deserted beaches on Pinel that you can reach and explore via a short hike.

Isle-Pinel-5---O
Umbrellas and chairs on the beach in front of Up on the Key Beach Bar/Restaurant

After your hike, you might want to head back down to sit under a beach umbrella and enjoy a frosty beverage. At the time of our visit, there were three beach bars/restaurants on Pinel: Karabuni, Up on the Key and Yellow Beach.

Isle-Pinel-3---O
Karabuni Beach Bar/Restaurant. Known for it’s fresh Lobster

Isle-Pinel-13---O
Yellow Beach Bar/Restaurant (located under the thatched roofs)

While writing this article, I found a FB link for Up on the Key that said the beach bar/restaurant was razed this past July amid some controversy (see article in The Daily Herald), so as of this writing, it looks as if Up on the Key is no longer located on Pinel Island. For those of you that have been there, it was the two story structure in between Karabundi and Yellow Beach. Too bad – they served up some good rum drinks and friendly conversation and I’m sure the beach looks quite different now.

Just a few more colorful images from our day of sun, fun and rum at Pinel Island, St. Martin…

Juggie’s Place, St. Maarten

While walking through Philipsburg, St. Maarten a couple of years ago, we came across a little – and I mean smaaaall bar with a sign above it saying “The Smallest Bar in the World”.

We pulled in to check it out and found that The Smallest Bar in the World is owned by a very nice man by the name of Juggie and that the bar is better known as Juggie’s Place.

copyright Rum Therapy
We’d only been in one other bar before claiming that it was the smallest, and that happened to be The Smallest Bar in Key West. Yep, Juggie’s bar is even smaaaaller.

We ordered the special – two beers and a cigar for $2.99, grabbed on of the few seats in front of the bar and chatted with Juggie for a while. We ended up spending more time there than anticipated, sipping our beers and reading Juggie’s words of wisdom printed on brown paper and affixed to the front of the bar.

copyright Rum Therapy
Is it truly the smallest bar in the world? No clue. Is it on a beautiful St. Maarten beach? No. It’s actually tucked in an alley behind the Big Wood Grill Beach Bar (on the boardwalk). Is it worth a stop? We sure thought so. Get a rum shot for $1.00, 2 beers & 1 cigar for $2.99 and spend some time chewing-the-fat with Juggie. Well, he words it just a little differently below… Priceless :)
