Loblolly Bay, Anegada

It’s really not that easy to get to Anegada in the British Virgin Islands, which is good because if it were, everyone would go. And part of Anegada’s charm is the fact that many times you can walk for miles along one of it’s gorgeous beaches and not see a single soul. That’s our kind of beach!

Loblolly Bay is located on the north side of Anegada. You can easily get a taxi to Loblolly from Setting Point or The Settlement. See the map below for more information on the location of Loblolly Bay.

Loblolly has some really good snorkeling in areas, but our favorite thing to do on Loblolly is to walk the seemingly unending white sand beach and play in the powder blue water.

Big Bamboo Beach Bar & Restaurant is located at the entrance to Loblolly. We didn’t have a chance to sample the food, but hear it’s very good and we certainly enjoyed a few cold rum beverages.

Another restaurant/bar called Flash of Beauty (love that name) is located close by.

There are palapas for shade, and also a dive and gift shop, restrooms and showers available at Big Bamboo.

Take a day trip from Tortola or Virgin Gorda, or plan to stay longer in the Loblolly Beach Cottages or one of the other small inns found on the island.

A little peace and quiet mixed with some spectacular beach scenery. We’re ready to go back – how about you?

Nature Boy Beach Bar, Tortola

We stumbled by Nature Boy Beach Bar by accident a few years ago while walking Long Bay Beach in Tortola.Unfortunately the bar was closed at the time and so on our recent visit to Tortola we decided to stop by once again.

The bar itself is small and has been assembled with materials found on the beach and land, but it’s located on stunning Long Bay Beach, just about where the road takes a left for Smuggler’s Cove.

Secluded and quiet, Nature Boy Beach Bar is a great place to relax, take in the scenery and enjoy a cold beverage.

Chat with Winston, aka Nature Boy, about Long Bay and the surrounding areas history. He eagerly shares his story about how he has built his own place in the sun – the bar and his home behind it.

If you’re in the area, or headed past it on the way to Smuggler’s Cove, be sure to stop in to say hi to Winston, enjoy a cold beer or Rum Punch and checkout the amazing scenery. As Winston says, it’s “Natures Little Secret”…

Smuggler’s Cove, Tortola

Smuggler’s Cove is a gorgeous, tranquil, soft sand beach fringed with palms on Tortola’s northwest side.The road to Smuggler’s Cove is bumpy and slow going, but you can also access the beach by taking a 20 minute hike from Long Bay Beach. Smuggler’s is usually quiet in the mornings, but can get busy on weekends and afternoons.

Most of the time the water is great for swimming and there are some areas of good snorkeling, but be careful of rough surf when there is a north swell. Be sure to stop by Nigel’s Boom Boom Beach Bar & Grill for a cold one and a light meal!

The palms lining the shore are tropically gorgeous and offer a lot of great shade when needed.
(Update: the hurricanes of 2017 destroyed many of the palms in the area so currently there is not as much shade as there once was.)

Go for: swimming, snorkeling and water sports (on calm days), sunbathing, picnics and scenery…

Little Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island

Little Deadman’s Beach, an extension of Deadman’s Beach on Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands, is a beautiful expanse of soft, light colored sand, excellent for sunbathing, snorkeling or just totally relaxing…

Rumored to have gotten its name for the pirates marooned on neighboring Dead Chest Island who drowned while attempting to swim to Peter Island and washed up on shore, Deadman’s Bay is gorgeous and well worth a visit!

Accessible only by boat, Little Deadman’s Beach offers beautiful views of Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island Resort and Tortola.

The protected bay is great for swimming, kayaking, walking the beach or just floating in the turquoise waters…

Walk over to the stunning Deadman’s Bay Beach, where although the beach chairs and other amenities are for use by the Peter Island Resort guests, day visitors can order lunch or beverages from Deadman’s Beach Bar & Grill.

If you want to stretch your legs a bit, take a hike up the road where you can sit and take in more amazing views of the bay.

And the other side of the island…

And, if you’re looking for a little “alone” time, just head over to Honeymoon Beach right next to Little Deadman’s Beach, where you’ll find just one thatched palapa with two lounge chairs.

One day on Little Deadman’s Beach wasn’t nearly enough and got us thinking that maybe a longer stay on island at the Peter Island Resort might just go on the “list”!

Rum Therapy Sailing in the British Virgin Islands (Part 4)

It was hard to sail on from Anegada. Such a laid back beautiful island. Think I could stay there for weeks, wandering the amazing deserted beaches….perhaps another trip will be in order.

We moved on with a nice sail back to Great Camanoe where we stopped to snorkel in a beautiful cove. The pelicans were going crazy dive bombing for minnows and we jumped in the gorgeous calm blue water to see what we could see.

It was a virtual minnow smorgasbord; easy to see what the pelicans were after. We also saw a fairly large school of squid in ultra clear water.

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the water and the scenery before moving on to our anchorage for the night – Trellis Bay.

Trellis Bay is a popular anchorage on Beef Island, and although crowded that evening, it gave us a chance to go ashore and experience Aragorn’s Studio and the other shops and sights in the area.

We spent a little time just hanging in the awesome hammock outside of Aragorn’s.

And checked out the fireballs and burning man used for the Trellis Bay Full Moon Parties.

We topped our stay in Trellis Bay off with a hilariously fun evening at The Last Resort on Bellamy Cay in Trellis Bay where we enjoyed a great dinner, played some foosball, sang at the top of our lungs and probably enjoyed just a little too much rum…

Although the party continued early into the morning hours, we dinghied back to our boat around midnight to rest up for a sail the next day to Jost Van Dyke.

The Baths, Virgin Gorda

The Baths, Virgin Gorda – one of the most recognized beaches in the British Virgin Islands. The Baths “biggest” feature? HUGE boulders that pepper the light sandy beach.

Devils Bay, to the south of The Baths and Spring Bay, to the north of The Baths both have gigantic boulders as well, but highest concentration of boulders are in The Baths area and you can find a trail here that will lead you around, over and through some of the most spectacular of them.

The path starts at the BVI National Trust building near the parking lot near the Top of the Baths Bar/Restaurant and shopping area and winds down the hill toward the beach.

You’ll find yourself walking on a sandy path one moment, then entering an opening between mammoth boulders, wading in shallow blue water between the rocks, climbing a few ladders and using ropes placed on some rocks to help navigate the incline.

And if you can make it through the maze to the end of the trail, you will be rewarded with the beautiful Devil’s Bay beach – a great place to sunbathe, and to swim and snorkel when the water is calm.

When you are done hiking, exploring, swimming and sunning, you can head back up the hill to enjoy a frosty beverage at the Top of the Baths, as well as a stunning view of The Baths, Sir Francis Drake Channel Beef Island and Tortola in the distance.

The Limin’ House, Tortola

Update from our original post

Several years ago we had the opportunity to stay at a beautiful villa named the Limin’ House on a hill overlooking Soper’s Hole in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Unfortunately Tortola was hit hard by the hurricanes of 2017 and the Limin’ House was not spared. During our recent visit to Tortola, we had the chance to stop by the Limin’ House to get a tour of the remodeled villa and talk to owner Susan McDavit. The Limin’ House is looking great again and ready for your next stay on Tortola!

A reminder of Irma. After the storm, they found this card had blown into one of the bathrooms and was adhered to the wall. Instead of removing it, they put a frame around it and left it where they found it!

Located high on a hill overlooking Soper’s Hole in West End Tortola, this beautiful Villa is aptly named. We enjoyed a short stay at the Limin’ House during our visit to Tortola last fall and enjoyed every limin’ minute of it.

According to a definition given on The Limin’ House website, the word limin’, when used as a Caribbean verb means “To relieve from attention or effort; relax”.

From the moment you arrive, you know this place will be something special.

With grand wooden entrance doors and lush tropical landscaping, you feel like you’re entering your own tropical hideaway.

The Limin’ House has 4 very private bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and sleeps 10, making it an ideal getaway for families as well as up to 4 couples. All bedrooms are air conditioned and have their own private balcony or patio.

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

There are a few beaches that we’ve come across in our travels that simply take our breath away and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands is definitely one of them.

With powder soft white sand and turquoise blue, clear water set off by lush foliage, it is truly a tropical paradise.

In addition to its incredible beauty, White Bay is home to some of the best beach bars around, such as One Love Bar & Grill, Gertrude’s, Soggy Dollar, and Ivan’s Stress Free Bar. (See more about Jost Van Dyke Beach Bars here: Bar Hopping On Jost Van Dyke)

Separated in the middle by a rocky outcropping, it’s well worth the hike to go from one end to the other checking out the people, the scenery and ALL of the bars! (be sure to wear shoes or sandals when crossing the outcropping. There is a cement stairway over the top of it, but there are some sharp rocks to navigate on Ivan’s side)

Getting there: Get to White Bay via boat, taxi over from Great Harbour, or rent a jeep from Great Harbour (the adventurous, non-inebriated, very fit or frugal individuals can walk over the hill from Great Harbour. We hiked it once…)

Beach: beautiful white sand with gradual access. Great for swimming in the quieter areas (watch for boats – White Bay can get very busy with boats, especially in the afternoon), snorkel by the rocks on the east end.

Recommended for: well, anyone that loves a beautiful beach…

Tip: because of the popularity of the beach bars on White Bay (especially Soggy Dollar), it can get very busy in the afternoon. If you like a party, you’ll love to be there at the busy time. If you’d rather experience White Bay when it’s quieter, consider visiting in the early morning, or later in the evening when the day crowds have gone home. Rambutan Villa, Virgin Gorda

We were given the opportunity to stay at the lovely Rambutan Villa during a recent visit to Virgin Gorda. Rambutan Villa is located directly on the beach on Nail Bay.
Rambutan is a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom Thai and Balinese inspired villa surrounded by lush tropical foliage.
Rambutan Villa is just steps away from Nail Bay and offers a secluded beach experience as well as a private pool just outside the living room door.
The backyard is perfect for a quiet tropical escape but also provides an excellent space for entertaining a larger crowd with an outdoor grill and dining area.
Nail Bay is great for snorkeling and excellent for early morning and evening walks. Just steps from the villa, it’s easy to spend time with your toes in the sand.

Rambutan has a full service gourmet kitchen with granite countertops and breakfast bar and opens up to the dining room and living area with a flat screen TV.
There are four large sized bedrooms, two of them Master Suites with their own bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are located in their own separate casita, offering exceptional space for up to four couples or a family. Rambutan sleeps 8.
And after a day of exploring Virgin Gorda, including some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean, North Sound, and some very scenic bars including Hog Heaven, when you stay at Rambutan Villa, you get to come home to sit on the back deck with a cocktail in hand and enjoy your own quiet and spectacular tropical sunset…
Recommended for: families or up to four couples, anyone looking for quiet, comfortable accommodations with a pool located directly on a beach.

Hog Heaven, Virgin Gorda

There are bars with a view and then there are bars with a VIEW! Hog Heaven is a Bar & Grill sitting high atop Virgin Gorda with an absolutely beautiful view of the entire North Sound.

From your perch in the sky, you can see Leverick Bay, Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock Resort, Necker Island and The Sandbox on Prickly Pear Island.
On clear days, you can even make out a faint strip of Anegada in the distance.

Hog Heaven is a small, unassuming building on top of the hill on Nail Bay Road overlooking North Sound. It’s owned by Blondie, who apparently is also a pig farmer/ship captain on Virgin Gorda.

One of the rum drinks on the menu was a Blondie Special and we ordered that and a rum punch and took a seat to drink in the view.

Hog Heaven is known for its BBQ, so we decided to order a plate, as well as a bowl of Conch Chowder. Both were delicious and very reasonably priced.
