Corsairs Beach Bar & Restaurant, Jost Van Dyke

Update: Corsair’s was severely impacted by the hurricanes in 2017 (as were all structures on JVD) but has since rebuilt. Still owned and run by Vinnie, it has a new look. See the photo below of the new structure.

Jost Van Dyke has more than it’s share of interesting beach bars scattered along its beautiful beaches and Corsairs, found on Great Harbour, is certainly one of them.

Corsairs is not hard to find for a couple of reasons. First, Great Harbour – although great – is not large and you can walk the entire length of it in just a few minutes. Secondly, the exterior of Corsairs is pink – kind of hard to miss. Actually, the pink exterior is kind of ironic, given the owner, Vinnie, is a tough looking biker who spends half the year in Colorado running a Harley Davidson store.

Corsairs is a great place to spend the afternoon sipping on Wench Juices or Pirate Punch’s while lounging on the front porch or swinging in the hammock, but don’t overlook the eclectic and tasty menu. We totally enjoyed some Conch Fritters with Goat Cheese Aioli during a recent visit and ordered some excellent pizza that Corsairs delivered to our cottage at White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages during a previous stay on Jost Van Dyke. We’ve heard that other Italian offerings are excellent as well as some of their fresh seafood dishes such as Stuffed Lobster.

If your boat is moored in Great Harbour, you can beach your dinghy right in front of Corsairs.

Next time you find yourself in Great Harbour, be sure to stop in and say hey to Vinnie and enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks. According to their website, it’s also a good place to book for a Wedding, Divorce party, Bachelor party, Bachlorette party, Pity party, or any other Special Occasion!

Le Sand, Baie Nettle, St. Martin

We set out to write about a pretty stretch of sand we spotted while exploring St. Martin between Baie Rouge and Marigot, but ended up focusing on a new (at the time of our visit) beach bar/restaurant on Baie Nettle, or Nettle Bay, called Le Sand.

We parked in the parking lot behind Le Sand and walked between Le Sand and Dreams Beach to get a look at Baie Nettle. The beach was nearly empty and gorgeous! Once we feasted our eyes on the white sand, blue water, view of Marigot and very inviting seating, we ended up staying a while…

Turns out, Le Sand had just recently opened and apparently the word had not gotten out yet. We didn’t mind – we had the beach almost completely to ourselves and enjoyed a few beverages while lounging in the sun and chatting with the friendly staff.

We decided not to stay for dinner as we were heading back to Dawn Beach that evening and were still ~~engorged~~ satisfied from yet another visit earlier that morning to Sarafina’s in Marigot.

That, apparently was our loss because since our visit, both Le Sand and and it’s next door neighbor, Dreams Beach, have become highly recommended for their gourmet French cuisine – some say even rivaling some of their competition in Grand Case. Wow – that’s some stiff competition!

Scotchies, Jamaica

If you want to try authentic jerk cuisine while vacationing in Jamaica, you should consider a visit to Scotchies. Scotchies has three locations in Jamaica, the original restaurant is just outside Montego Bay and the others can be found outside of Ocho Rios and Kingston.

We visited the Scotchies close to Ocho Rios during a stay in Runaway Bay.

The aroma hit us as soon as we got out of the car. Smoky, barbecue deliciousness…mmm…could hardly wait.

Jerk chicken, pork and fish are barbecued in the traditional style over pimento wood.

Awww – shoot! Just missed the Pork Rum Ribs.

We ordered 1/4 lb of chicken and 1/4 lb of pork. There were also some delicious sides such as rice & beans, festival (a delightful slightly sweet cake or roll that is said to be a perfect accompaniment to spicy jerk dishes), and roasted breadfruit. Foregoing the sides for a Red Stripe (we were only 3 days into our all-inclusive stay at Jewel Runaway Bay and already had minimal room for a full meal!), we sat down at the bar to enjoy our foil wrapped and succulent jerk.

Plenty of room to sit outside and dine as well.

Beautiful grounds and great food. We especially dug the jerk pork. So good. Next time we’ll leave room for the sides too – hmmm. Or maybe just more meat…

Friends Foto’s – Great Meal in a Tropical Location

We love to share our travel pictures with you and love to see yours too, so we thought we’d test out a new feature to showcase some of your favorite photos each week! This week we asked for you to submit shots that would fit the theme “Great Meal in a Tropical Location” and you sent in some great ones. Check out the ones we chose to showcase this week.

Chips and Guacamole at Tita Tulum on Tulum Beach.

Why was it so special? Fresh guacamole with an ice cold Corona where the jungle meets the sea on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Here’s a photo from our dinner at Coco Bistro Restaurant in Provo, Turks & Caicos. It was THE BEST MEAL we have EVER tasted! On the left – Pan Seared Fresh Salmon with Smashed Buttered Red Skin Potatoes, Crisp Shallots, Sautéed Spinach and a Lemon & Caper Beurre Noisette with Tomato Confit. On the right – Free Range Grain-Fed Chicken with Grilled Tiger Shrimps with West Indian Coconut Curry, Crispy Poppadum, Jasmine Rice and a Spicy Banana Chutney.

Why it was so special : The atmosphere/ambiance was so beautiful, with all the white linen tables under the canopy of palm trees. As soon as you enter, you feel like you’re going to get something special! The waiters & staff were friendly and the owner walks around to ask how you’re doing… very personable! The meals were fantastic, so exotic & delicious, with the most fresh & organic ingredients. We loved it so much, we went back the next night and had the same 2 dishes again! The BEST DINNER EVER!!

Meal: Fried Grouper
Location: Taino Beach Resort, Grand Bahama

Why so special: Fried grouper, in and of itself, isn’t something overly special but eating a plate of it, overlooking the beach, surrounded by family, is. This was the last day of our family vacation and the simplicity of this meal, coupled with an ice cold Kalik, made it a great tropical meal!

Succulent shrimp flavors enhanced with 3 dipping sauces and French fries always taste better in the islands! Amazing views of the sea while soaking in the sunshine!

Lee’s Roadside Grill and Deep Sea Fishing in St. Maarten
We went deep sea fishing on our honeymoon and caught an Ahi Tuna. When we got back, Lee’s prepared it and it was delicious!
Why it was special: We caught it :-)

CocoMaya Restaurant and Bar, Virgin Gorda

Toasting the evening at CocoMaya, a beautiful restaurant and bar in Virgin Gorda…

Although we love re-visiting some of our favorite places in the islands, we also love to find and experience new ones – and then share them with you!

We’d read just a little bit about a new restaurant/bar on Virgin Gorda and during our last BVI visit, we were able to stop and experience CocoMaya.

Established in 2011 and not far from Spanish Town, we found CocoMayato be a real treat.We were able to spend one evening there and enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor lounge with our toes in the sand around the fire pit.

CocoMaya’s outdoor lounge is an excellent place to meet up with friends or just cozy up on a lounge chair for two around the fire.

CocoMaya’s decor is appealing and relaxing and blends right in with the tropical surroundings.

Wonderful aromas were wafting from the dining area and if we didn’t already have dinner planned upon our return to the boat, we would have enjoyed one of their menu offerings in the open air dining room with a beautiful view of the beach and sunset.

Although we certainly didn’t mind just spending time on a lounge chair for two on the beach with a soft tropical breeze and the warmth of the fire on our toes…

Top Of the Baths, Virgin Gorda

If you work up a thirst while roaming The Baths in Virgin Gorda, you can make a stop at Top of the Baths – a bar and restaurant with a freshwater swimming pool and gift shops.

All that – and a fabulous view of some of the gigantic boulders of The Baths, beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel and Tortola.

Top of the Baths is open for breakfast and lunch and serves up some really good frozen rum drinks as well as great desserts. Be sure to try Evanette’s Key Lime Pie and the Homemade Coconut Cruzan Rum Cake…

And enjoy your rum with a view….

Mr. Busby’s Beach Bar, St. Maarten

Mr. Busby’s Beach Bar, St. Maarten is a laid back and fun beach bar with good food by day and an award winning Italian Food Restaurant called Daniels by the Sea at night.

Located on the east side of St. Maarten on beautiful Dawn Beach – close to the Oyster Bay Beach Resort, this bustling place is just barely on the Dutch side of St. Maarten.

Mr. Busby’s sits on beautiful Dawn Beach and you can rent the beach chairs that sit in front of the bar. Food and drink can be ordered directly from your chair on the beach, making it even easier to relax and enjoy the St. Maarten sunshine…

From Mr Busby’s you can even see St. Barths in the distance (very faintly in the center of the picture)

Swimming is good on calm days and there’s plenty of room to walk the long beach.

We enjoyed spending an afternoon at Mr. Busby’s and think it’s worth a stop if in the area for lunch – or a fine Italian dinner, good rum beverages and some quality St. Maarten beach time.

Saba Rock, British Virgin Islands

Saba Rock is a small, private island that sits in the beautiful North Sound of Virgin Gorda.

Update: Many of the businesses, buildings and residences in North Sound, Virgin Gorda were damaged or destroyed in the 2017 hurricanes including Saba Rock. They are rebuilding and hope to open in Fall 2021. Check their website for more information. The photo below was taken of Saba Rock in March 2020.

Saba Rock is less than an acre in size and accessible by boat or ferry. We first visited Saba Rock during a sail trip when we stopped for just a few minutes to get gas and ice. During a recent trip to Virgin Gorda, we wanted to get back to Saba Rock to experience more of it, so we rented a dinghy from Leverick Bay Marina. By having a dinghy for the day, we were also able to explore neighboring Prickly Pear Island and enjoy a rum beverage at the Fat Virgin Cafe.

Saba Rock houses a restaurant – which we hear serves up succulent land & sea dinners, an over water lounge/bar, a boutique hotel, a full service marina, gift shoppe, 10 deep water slips and boat moorings.

Saba Rock has a ferry that will pick you up from several locations in the North Sound, such as Gun Creek and Leverick Bay – just call them to make arrangements.

Out back they have an excellent area to relax and enjoy the view of North Sound and the Bitter End Yacht Club, with nice soft sand and hammocks.

We spent some time lounging in the hammocks before heading back in to sample a Saba Rock Banana Daiquiri – recommended to us by a friend who thought they were absolutely the best around.

They were pretty darn good and the view made it even better…

Calmos Café, St. Martin

Whether you just want to relax on the beach with your toes in the sand while sipping on your favorite beverage or to enjoy some tapas while watching the sun set over the bay, Calmos Cafe has you covered.

Located right on the beach on the French side in Grand Case, St. Martin, Calmos Cafe serves everything from fine wines to tropical rum concoctions and tasty fresh, local food to go with it.

We enjoyed some tapas along with a frozen rum drink called the Calmos (with peach and mango) and a Rhum Runner, all of which were excellent, but even more so as we enjoyed them while sitting just inches from the water while watching the sun set…

The atmosphere is warm and quiet most nights, but if you’re looking for more excitement, plan to visit on the nights they have a live salsa or reggae band.

Their motto: C’est La Vie – That’s life!

We got there early one evening and it was relatively uncrowded, but as the evening wore on, more and more people arrived snapping up all the tables and seats by the shoreline.

And why not. With good food and drinks and a view like this…

So, if you’re looking for a place to enjoy some rum with a view while on St. Martin, Calmos Cafe will serve up that and much, much more.

Skinny Legs, St. John

Skinny Legs, a funky establishment serving up good food and drink to happy customers in quiet Coral Bay, St. John. Apparently named after the original owners sinewy stems, Skinny Legs is a great place to land to relax, chat with locals and visitors alike and to enjoy some great burgers and rum drinks.

Friends Dougie and Moe opened Skinny Legs in 1991 when Coral Bay was even quieter than it is now and it quickly became a favorite of locals. The word has now gotten out and now many tourists to St. John now make their way to the “other” side of the island to enjoy some time at Skinny Legs.

On April Fools Day, 2012, Skinny Legs was purchased by husband and wife team Doug and Jaime who continue to carry on the tradition of good food and drink and a fun-laid back atmosphere.
