Hot Buttered Rum Apple Pie

We’re BIG fans of apple pie and so when we ran across this recipe for apple pie combined with hot buttered rum, we just had to give it a try! We used a recipe from The Frugal Foodie Mama, made some adjustments and LOVE it! So moist and tasty that I think we’ve got a new favorite Apple Pie Recipe. YUM!

Hot Buttered Rum Apple Pie

A delicious rendition of apple pie, just in time for the holidays!
Course: Dessert
Servings: 1 pie

Ingredients

Hot Buttered Rum Sauce

Pie Filling Ingredients

Instructions

Hot Buttered Rum Sauce

  • Combine the brown sugar, rum and butter and heating over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  • Bring to a boil and then remove from heat. Put aside.

Pie Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees
  • Combine the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour in a large bowl until the apples are coated.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the bottom crust. Drizzle half of the Hot Buttered Rum Sauce over the apples.
  • Cover the pie with the other crust and squeeze the bottom and top edges of the pie together. Using a knife, cut 6-8 slits in the top crust.
  • Sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon on the top crust.
  • Place the pie on a cookie sheet and bake for about 45 minutes until the crust is golden brown. We didn't need to cover the pie, but be sure to keep your eye on it during the last 15 minutes of baking to make sure the crust is not getting too brown. If needed, place a sheet of aluminum foil lightly on the top during the last few minutes to prevent over-browning
  • Allow the pie to cool for a while, then cut, serve with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream and drizzle with some of the remaining Hot Buttered Rum Sauce. YUM!

Authentic Rum Punch Recipe

1 of sour
2 of sweet
3 of strong
4 of weak

This is the rhyme commonly used to recall the recipe for an authentic rum punch. Just try remembering it after trying one
(or two!)
Jump to Recipe

Can’t quite remember where we sampled our first rum punch. Barbados? Jamaica? Hmmm – I know we’ve enjoyed them on many islands, and they all seem to have a completely different taste. Is it the rum used? Is is the “sweet” ingredient or the “weak” ingredient? I think it’s safe to say – all of the above – with a huge dose of “who you’re enjoying it with and where”.

For this recipe we used Grenadine as the “sweet”, although it’s common in countries such as Jamaica to use a strawberry or cherry syrup. A simple syrup (1 part sugar to 2 parts water) can also be used, but you will forfeit the fruity taste and red coloring.

In this recipe we used water as the “weak”. In other rum punch recipes, such as our Caribbean Rum Punch, different fruit juices are used instead of water, creating endless opportunities to vary the taste depending on the juices used. As water seems to be used in the most authentic versions, that’s what we used here – and liked the result!

By using the measurement in the rhyme above, it’s easy to make a large batch of this tasty rum concoction for parties and gatherings by multiplying the measurements – that way you can mix it ahead and just sit back and enjoy….

Authentic Rum Punch

1 of sour, 2 of sweet, 3 of strong, 4 of weak...this is the rhyme commonly used to remember the recipe for an authentic rum punch.
Course: Drinks
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. Lime juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 2 oz. Grenadine (simple syrup, cherry syrup or strawberry syrup are also commonly used)
  • 3 oz. Rum (we used Appleton V/X)
  • 4 oz. Water
  • Dash of Angostura Bitters
  • Nutmeg (this is optional in authentic rum punch, but we always use freshly grated nutmeg)

Instructions

  • Pour all ingredients in a glass over ice and stir.
  • Sprinkle with a little freshly grated nutmeg and garnish with a lime or orange slice, add a biodegradeable straw and enjoy!

Notes

We have also used Mount Gay Eclipse with very good results. Some use Wray & Nephew for a very potent punch. Every rum has it’s own unique taste – so experiment to see which you like best!

Finding the Rhum on St. Barths

When we started the company Rum Therapy in 2010, we knew little more about rum than it was an ingredient in some of our favorite island cocktails; piña coladas, rum punch and painkillers, oh and bushwackers – can’t forget bushwackers… And that rum appeared in the lyrics of many Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett songs. And that wherever you go in the islands, there’s rum.
That’s it.

See our list (and recipes!) of the 10 Best Tropical Rum Drinks

Since then, we’ve learned a lot more. I mean, when you start with virtually no knowledge of a subject, you’ve got a ways to go. We’re not experts by any means, like our friend Dave Russell of Rum Gallery, but we’ve learned more about how rum is distilled and different types of rum and what rums are good for sipping or mixing in cocktails and although it’s not our goal to become rum experts, we’re certainly up for the challenge of learning more about this spirit with a long and storied history.

So, we’ll continue to do the research (best done in the islands on beautiful beach or at a great beach bar or on a boat, don’t you think?) with the hope of continuing to provide the best rum experiences possible (cocktail recipes, best beach bars, best locations to sip tropical libations, distillery tours, etc., etc., etc.)

In the meantime, be sure to check out the plethora of rum recipes available on our website either by category or by picture (prepare to drool just a little):

Pineapple & Rum Sorbet

Pineapple Rum Sorbet – perfect treat for the warm and lazy days of summer! We used an ice cream maker to mix our batch up, but if you don’t have one, just put the mix in a freezer safe container, freeze overnight, then re-mix in the blender and freeze a little longer. Easy and delicious!

copyright Rum Therapy
Pineapple Rum Sorbet

Pineapple & Rum Sorbet
(makes 4-6 servings)

1/4 c. gold rum
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
1 fresh, ripe pineapple

Peel and core the pineapple. Cut into chunks and place in a blender. Pour the rum in the blender. Heat water and sugar on the stove until the sugar melts. Cool, then add to the blender. Blend all ingredients just slightly – it’s ok to have small chunks of pineapple (in fact, we prefer it!) Using an ice cream maker (or the method above) freeze the mix. Garnish with pineapple and enjoy.
