Dark Mojito

Here’s another one to add to your Mojito Recipe Files – a Dark Mojito. It’s truly just a slight variation of The Perfect Mojito and a Dirty Mojito and in our opinion, tastes the rummiest of the three! Use a dark rum with a taste that you find pleasant, as the dark rum taste does rise above the milder taste of mint and sugar.

Lemon Pomegranate Fizz

Light and refreshing and not too sweet – the perfect summer rum drink! Play with the ratio to make it just right for you. More pomegranate juice or lemon juice to increase the tartness, more lemon lime soda to increase the sweetness, or use diet lemon lime soda if you want to cut back on the calories! Ahhh…enjoy!

We tried a Frozen Rum Runner with a Float the Boat – an extra shot of rum for a buck.

In addition, Big Kahuna offers a good selection of eats as well as their exclusive and homemade Love Juice – an infusion of blueberries, strawberries and pineapple in vodka, that they “promise” will be the best shot or drink you’ve ever tried.

Order a cold one and sit on the patio under an umbrella while watching the activity in beautiful Charlotte Amalie Harbor. We’ll be back Big Kahuna and next time we’ll have to give that Love Juice a try…

Rumaggedon

We enjoyed a week long sail through the Grenadines last year on the tall ship Diamant with Island Windjammers and in addition to the great itinerary (read about the trip here: Island Windjammer Cruise) we absolutely loved happy hour. Most evenings we were served up the scrumptious Rum Swizzles that the Diamant is famous for, but on the last evening aboard, they pulled out the stops and served up another excellent rum drink called the “Rumaggedon”. Even with some intense prying, o.k – maybe even a little whining,  our bartender Brandon would not divulge the yummy recipe. Imagine our surprise when we found that Island Windjammers posted the Rumaggedon recipe on their Facebook page today! I’m sure these are the tastiest when enjoyed during happy hour on board the Diamant or Sagitta, but maybe you can mix up a batch, close your eyes and start imagining your next sail!

BBC-Bailey’s Banana Colada

BBC – Bailey’s, Banana Colada, I think. We’ve enjoyed several BBC’s while on vacation, but whenever you ask what BBC stands for, you get a different description – usually involving the C. Some say coconut, some say colada, but we say, whatever it is, it’s GOOD.

We tried several different recipes, but played around a little with them and came up with one that we really like. Here it is – enjoy!!

Rum Margarita Recipes

Need a Margarita recipe using rum for Cinco de Mayo or National Margarita Day? Si, si – we did too, so we experimented a little and came up with these two. With the rum, the taste  resembles a daiquiri, but with not a lot of added sugar, it’s not as sweet and you get the nice margarita tartness. Mmmm – Salud!

Petit Tabac, The Grenadines

While sailing the Grenadines a few years ago, we made a stop at the stunningly beautiful Tobago Cays. From our anchorage, we could see an island in the distance called Petit Tabac. Our Captain informed us that this pretty little island was a location used in the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Specifically, it was the island that Capt. Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth ended up on when forced to walk the plank.

Intrigued, we asked if we could sail over and explore it and he happily he obliged.

Petit-Tabac-5(a)-(600)-O
The grove of palm trees shown burning in the film were very recognizable as we approached. Thankfully the burning palms were merely cinematic wizardry as the the palms were alive and well.

The plan was to find the rum. If you’re familiar with the film, when Jack Sparrow was marooned on this island with Elizabeth Swann, he knew of a rum stash and set out to find it.

Knowing that we’d find no actual rum, our Captain and Cook prepared a large jug of rum punch for us to enjoy as we explored the island.

Petit-Tabac-7-(600)-O
We then paced off in the same area Jack Sparrow did while looking for his rum stash in the film.

Petit-Tabac-9-(600)-O
Of course, we didn’t find anything, but enjoyed re-enacting the antics of Captain Jack – and the rum punch didn’t hurt either.

Petit-Tabac-10-(600)-O
The deserted little island was beautiful and we took our time walking the entire perimeter.

Petit-Tabac-12-(600)-O
We were the only ones on Petit Tabac that day.

Petit-Tabac-8-(600)-O
From Petit Tabac we could see Union Island,

Petit-Tabac-6-(600)-O
And the other Tobago Cays.

Petit-Tabac-13-(600)-O
From our perch in the shade we took the amazing beauty of the area in,

Petit-Tabac-11-(600)-O
The almost blindingly white sand against the vibrant blue water was stunning.

We reluctantly headed back to the boat after a day on a deserted island filled with rum and browned by the sun and looked forward to our next adventure in the Grenadines.

Have you been to Petit Tabac? Tell us about it!
